They teach him magic, teach him fighting, teach him basic daily life skills, and turn him into a strapping young lad ready to set out into the world. Unlike the lazy Mary Sues of the genre and their endless treadmill of effortless success, Paladin's readers are taken along the Bildungsroman and witness the protagonist's growth through struggle.
